Alex Johnstone – making a point as most promising speaker
30 May 2025
Year 11 student Alex Johnstone, 16, has represented Canterbury at the New Zealand Schools’ Debating Championships in Wellington.
Alex, who has been debating for two years, has been thrilled with his selection as a team reserve following his recognition as the most promising speaker at the regional competition.
“It was brilliant to achieve so highly among my peers at the regional event and then be selected to go to nationals and make the most of this wonderful experience,” he says. “I am so grateful that I have been able to have many development opportunities during my training and learn from the best debaters in the country at the national contest.”
As an older student next year, Alex hopes that he will represent Canterbury as a full speaking member of the team.
In total, 14 teams have competed for the national title, with Canterbury finishing 5th. The grand final was held in the Grand Hall at Parliament.
Alex also appreciates the support of the team sponsor, CESUT (Canterbury English Speaking Union Trust).
